Every year someone declares a trade "dead". Plumbing never gets the memo. In 2026 it remains one of the most secure, best-paid and genuinely useful careers you can learn in Manchester and the North West — and unlike a lot of jobs, a robot isn't going to unblock a soil stack any time soon.
The security is real
Water and drainage aren't optional. Every home, school, office and factory needs plumbing that works, and needs someone qualified when it doesn't. That baseline demand is why time-served plumbers rarely struggle for work — recessions come and go, but burst pipes are eternal.
The money is good — and it climbs
A qualified plumber working unsupervised earns a comfortable living, and the ceiling is higher than people assume once you add specialisms. At MCR Gas the plumbing ladder starts at £32,000 and climbs with experience and extra tickets — and crucially, there's a funded route onto gas.
The smart move: plumbing then gas
Here's the bit that changes the maths. A plumber who adds a gas ACS qualification opens up boiler and heating work — a big jump in earning power. Plenty of firms will hire you as a plumber and keep you there. The better ones fund your gas tickets and move you up. If you've ever been put off gas by the cost of qualifying, the right employer removes that barrier entirely.
How apprenticeships actually work
A proper plumbing apprenticeship is a real job with day-release to college, not free labour with a broom. You should be out on real work from early on, with a named engineer responsible for teaching you, and your pay should rise each year. By the time you qualify you should be trusted on jobs alone — and go straight onto the qualified pay scale, not wait around to "prove yourself".
